Barbering

Barbering I:  36 weeks/280 hours
Elective: 3 credits
Prerequisite: Recommendation of Counselor       Course No. 8740
Barbering is the study of hair, scalp, and skin. Students study and prepare in a clincial lab setting, using mannequins and live models for manipulative practice. The program emphasizes saftey and sanitation, communication, and management skills. Related areas of study include psychology, ethics, and professional image. Competency completions prepare the students to work or apprentice in a local barber shop or beauty salon.

Barbering II:  36 weeks/280 hours
Elective: 3 credits
Prerequisite: Barbering I                                              Course No. 8741
Students apply their knowledge of barbering skills in a clinical lab setting, using mannequines and live models for manipulative practice. The program emphasizes safety and sanitation, communication skills, and management of a barber shop or beauty salon. Related areas of study include pshychology, ethics, and professional image. Competency completions prepare the students for the Virginia State Licensing Exam. The cooperative education method is available for this course Students combine classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training in an approved position with continuing supervision throughout the school year.

Desirable Aptitudes
A student entering this field of study should have an interest in people and a pleasing personality. Good grooming, dexterity, coordination, a sense of form, good color concepts, and artistry are important traits to possess. Communication skills, knowledge of the basic art principles, and a basic understnading of chemistry and math is desirable.

Employment Outlook
Qualifying students (those who have maintained a C average with fewer than five absences for the year) will be eligible to participate in the work experience program during second semster. Students in this program work in the salon as beginning barbers. Students who have met all competency requirements wills it for their state board testing during the fourth nine weeks of school succesful students will be licensed barbers upon graduation. AFter receiving this license, no additional training is required for entry-level positions in a barbering salon environment. Salaries are determined only by the ability and ambition of the individual.
