Nurse Aide

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Counselor

Course Information
Nurse Aide is a technical course offered at the eleventh and twelfth grade levels. Emphasis is given to the study of the Nurse Aide related to the health care system. Students study nutrition, geriatrics, body structure and function, and medical terminology. They are also introduced to disease and infection control. The course includes basic nursing skills including communication skills and interpersonal relationships, CPR, first aid, and patient care.

What is the course like?
This course is designed to prepare students for employment in a hospital or a nursing home as nurse aides. It also may be taken in preparation for the course in practical nursing.

The first semester will offer the student an introduction to body structure and function, human behavior, basic nursing skills, nutrition, first aid, and the concepts of wellness.

The second semester provides the students with an opportunity to participate in the hospital or nursing home. While observing various members of the health care team at work, students are helped to make decisions about health careers.

Students participate in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), a club which emphasizes the development of leadership skills, education, and service.

Who may apply?
Rising juniors and seniors enrolled in a Henrico County Public School may apply.

Who is the Nurse Aide?
This is a person who is qualified to serve as a member of the health care team by assisting the nurse in a hospital or a nursing home. Being a Nurse Aide is a good step toward becoming a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse.

Employment Outlook
The student should possess the following characteristics: a sincere desire to help others, a pleasant personality, integrity and good health. The staff at the Technical Center will help you obtain the appropriate nursing skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to take the licensing examination to become a certified nurse aide. Students who become certified prior to high school graduation will earn two verified credits.
