Barbering is the study of hair, scalp and skin. Learning is grounded in theory to prepare for practicing procedures in a clinical lab setting or classroom using manikins for manipulative skill practice. You will learn personal safety and professionalism along with sanitation and disinfection of equipment and facilities. Develop skills in shampooing and conditioning hair, as well as styling and cutting hair. You will be introduced to chemical texture services and develop skills in manicure and pedicure procedures. In addition, you will study and prepare in a clinical lab setting using manikins and live models for manipulative skill practice. Your learning experience will include social interaction, ethics, and presentation of a professional image. Competency and hour completions prepare the students for the Virginia Board of Barbering licensing exam at the end of your second-year.
Barbering 2/3 (2nd Year)

First Semester
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Barbering 1
Learning builds on the theoretical foundation of general sciences and practices in cosmetology to increase proficiency in hair cutting and styling on live models, with attention to professionalism, client consultation, safety and infection control. You will be trained in safe chemical processes related to hair. In addition, learn to care for skin, hands and feet. You will also be introduced to a business management unit with a focus on managing the salon.
Barbering 3
18 weeks, 1.5 credits, Course No. 8742
Second Semester
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Barbering 1 and 2
In this advanced course, learning builds on the theoretical foundation of general sciences and practices in barbering to increase proficiency in hair cutting and styling on live models, with attention to professionalism, client consultation, safety and infection control.You will be trained in safe chemical processes related to chemical texture services and advanced hair coloring techniques. Develop your artistic skills with wigs and hair additions. You will also learn to care for skin, hands and feet. An advanced business management unit focuses on managing a salon. Competency completion prepares you for the Virginia State Licensing Exam. You can combine classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training in an approved position or internship with continuing supervision throughout the school year.
Any student identified as a Barbering CTE Completer/Finisher will sit for an industry credential test. An industry credential test could be any industry certification examination, licensure or occupational competency assessment as approved by the Virginia Board of Education. Students identified will take the Virginia Barbering Examination or industry certification.
