Program Description
This program is designed to be completed in two years during the 11th and 12th grades. Barbering II and III are completed during the second year.
Year 1
Barbering I (2 credits): This introductory course is designed for students pursuing a career as a master barber. Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills in a clinical lab setting, using mannequins and live models for manipulative practice. The program emphasizes personal safety, professionalism, scalp and hair care, hair cutting, styling, lightening and coloring, shaving, and barbershop management.
Year 2
Barbering II (2 credits): This course is designed to build on the knowledge and skills from Master Barbering I. Students will apply their knowledge and skills in a clinical lab setting, using mannequins and live models for manipulative practice. The program emphasizes skills in the areas of safety, professionalism, hair cutting, styling, shaving, barbershop management, and chemical service procedures.
Barbering III (2 credits): In this advanced course, students build on their theoretical foundation of general sciences and practices in barbering to increase proficiency in hair cutting and styling on live models, with attention to professionalism, client consultation, safety, and infection control. Students are trained in safe chemical processes related to chemical texture services and advanced hair coloring techniques. They also develop artistic skills with wigs and hair additions. An advanced business management unit focuses on creating a barbershop business plan. Completion of this course prepares the student for the Virginia State Licensing Exam.

Real-World Experience: Students will gain hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment and practices, preparing them for real-world barbering settings. The program includes guest speakers and live demonstrations, providing valuable insights from industry professionals. Students attend working barber shops in the local community and provide services on our school's Entrepreneurship Day under the supervision of licensed barbers. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in externships with local salons and barber shops to gain practical experience.
Certifications: Those who complete the program are eligible to earn their State Board of Barbering license and Workplace Readiness (WRS) certification. State Board Examination eligibility is contingent on a student meeting the 840-hour attendance requirement over the two-year program.
Is this a Good Fit for You?Students in this program should understand the importance of their attendance because of the 840-hour state requirement for licensure testing. Students should expect both rigorous academic study as well as hands-on training, as both will be tested. A good candidate should be prepared to study both in and outside of class. Additionally, they should be prepared to interact with clients and communicate effectively. Ideal candidates for this program are those who are dedicated, disciplined, and passionate about pursuing a career in barbering. They should have a strong work ethic, good time management skills, and the ability to work well with others.
