A Graphics COmmuncations student produce Promotional Buttons - Made to Order

The Graphic Communications program at the ACE Center at Hermitage is redefining what career and technical education can look like. In addition to rigorous academic instruction, students in this program participate in a hands-on, business-based training model—similar to an apprenticeship—that blends classroom learning with real-world production experience.

Operating as a fully functional print services provider, the program serves Henrico County Public Schools and local government associations, offering everything from digital printing and signage to custom forms and promotional materials. Students manage live jobs, interact with clients, and oversee production workflows, gaining invaluable experience in both technical and professional skills.

Last year, the program officially crossed into six-figure territory, marking a major milestone in its evolution from classroom project to county-serving enterprise. Even more impressive, it continues to deliver high-quality services at significantly reduced costs—saving the county an estimated substantial percentage compared to market rates.

Since the start of the new fiscal year in July, the program has already produced hundreds of jobs across categories like:

  • General Printing: Digital prints, HCPS forms, and administrative materials

  • Signage: Banners and yard signs for school events and public outreach

  • Apparel & Promotional: T-shirts, stickers, and custom branded items

With over 140 unique customers and dozens of jobs already completed or in production, the program is on track to surpass last year’s performance. Students are not only building portfolios—they’re building a reputation.

“This program is more than just a class—it’s a launchpad,” say instructors. “Our students leave with real experience, real skills, and real confidence.”

The Graphic Communications program exemplifies how career education can be both practical and powerful—preparing students for success while serving the community in meaningful ways.
